Enriching Impact Assessment at CIMMYT AgEcon
La Rovere, Roberto; Dixon, John; Hellin, Jonathan.
The International Center for Maize and Wheat Improvement (CIMMYT) is a CGIAR centre with a long tradition of impact assessment (IA). Until recently, such work had focused on the rates of adoption of improved germplasm and returns on investment. Limited attention was directed at measuring impacts in terms of livelihood security or poverty reduction. In 2005, therefore, CIMMYT's Impacts Targeting and Assessment Unit (ITAU) began to develop and promote more wide-ranging types of IA. In order to enhance its IA culture and institutionalize IA within the Center, ITAU organized a series of workshops that brought together different players amongst CIMMYT's staff and partners. Coupled with follow-up activities, these have made it possible for social and biophysical...

Household Resource Endowment and Determinants of Adoption of Drought Tolerant Maize Varieties: A Double-hurdle Approach AgEcon
Legese, Getachew; Langyintuo, Augustine S.; Mwangi, Wilfred; Jaleta, Moti; La Rovere, Roberto.
Existing literature suggests the influence of household wealth on farmer's technology adoption decisions. In 2007, this study was conducted to provide a clearer understanding of how differences in household wealth affect the way in which other variables influence adoption decisions. Using data from 369 households in Adama and Adami Tulu Jido Kombolcha districts of Ethiopia, the paper first stratified households into poorly and well-endowed categories based on wealth indices constructed using their productive assets by the principal components method. A double hurdle model was then specified and estimated for each wealth group to assess factors influencing the adoption and use intensity of improved varieties. The results suggest that factors influencing the...

Poverty Mapping in Rural Syria for Enhanced Targeting AgEcon
Szonyi, Judit A.; de Pauw, Eddy; La Rovere, Roberto; Aw-Hassan, Aden.
Poverty maps allow assessing the well-being of rural population in a spatial context and identifying poverty hotspots. The maps can be used for regional policy analysis as they help in identifying areas where the rural poor live and where rural poverty is determined by the endowment and quality of natural resources and by population pressure. Natural resource endowment was assessed in the study by calculating an Agricultural Resource Index based on the availability of different major agricultural resources. Income per-capita was calculated by using census data, adjusted by the rural population density. The results show that the better income areas of Syria are located in the irrigated or higher-rainfall areas, but lower-income pockets exist due to the...

Targeting Research for Enhanced Impact on Poverty in Marginal Areas: The Representative Case of the Dry Areas of Syria AgEcon
La Rovere, Roberto; Aw-Hassan, Aden.
Agricultural research in marginal dry areas can contribute to reducing poverty through the development of technological, institutional and policy options for poor farmers by addressing diversified opportunities and development pathways. This paper analyzes the diversity of rural livelihood strategies in the Khanasser Valley in northwest Syria, an area representative of marginal drylands. We experimentally define an operational classification of household typologies based on their different livelihood strategies, capabilities, and opportunities by applying a Sustainable Livelihoods framework. Livelihoods diversity has implications on where and how research must be targeted to have impact on poverty. Households less endowed in land and natural resources and...
